Write City Gives Back

Picture
Our students radically change their perceptions about what they're capable of and the degree of complexity present around them. Their ability to give voice to divergent and analytical thought processes paves the way to meaningful and innovative involvement in projects that benefit their school, home, and community. For instances, with her English tutor, one student used a routine business class resume assignment to explore and publicize youth employment opportunities with L'Arche, an organization dedicated to providing compassionate care to individuals with developmental disabilities. The student gains perspective by taking the school assignment to a new level of social awareness. By working with her Write City English tutor she realized that she could extend her assignment from the virtual to the actual, making the reality of youth employment and her role within that system a life choice rather than an isolated assignment.

Because we are educators as much as we are students and social agents, we welcome the chance to engage, think, and work with individuals and organizations who share our values. We strive to expose our students to rich new ways of thinking, not simply to model alternatives, but to encourage them to blaze their own paths of learning. We feel that working alongside groups like Branch Out Theatre, Crossroads Coaching, MotionLive Ent, Literature for Life, Motivate Canada, You and Media, and the Youth Action Network will provide us with exciting intellectual and social partnerships that will enrich the social change, growth, and intellectual exchange we hope to effect.

Why Write City is Socially Innovative

At Write City, we understand the profound effect a strong education has on children. We also understand that same effect is carried beyond the individual into society. In this sense, every writing specialist at Write City has been transformed through knowledge; they have a personal stake in advancing the scope and depth of what they know. And while we come to knowledge through critical thought, our sharing of that knowledge depends on our competency in language.

Write City distinguishes our English tutoring program by placing an emphasis on teaching our students how to be skilled communicators.  We inspire our students to develop their own voice - no matter what they wish to express. But we add caveats. We make them aware that they need to understand their position Our aim is to expose our students to new ideas and enable each of them to analyze texts, media, issues, and people, to develop cogent opinions and responses to what they’ve learned, and to competently express their ideas both in writing and speaking.

These skills are developed in one-on-one partnerships with graduate-level writers who share their expertise and inspire a desire to learn. The intellectual companionship that takes place is a novel way to combat isolation, anxiety and self-doubt in learning; so that children may know that they possess the tools to speak their voice. Our students gain access to the joys of feeling confident, articulate, and engaged in a network of thought. Our students - ranging from elementary school-aged children and young international students to 4th year university students and adults who want to rejoin intellectual conversations - develop critical sensitivities and a passion to listen and be heard. Write City Inc. is a community of thinkers and educators who spread this kind of empowerment to individuals who in turn enrich their communities as thoughtful leaders.
